Frequently Asked Questions
+ Can a natural deodorant really work? Which ingredient is responsible for the deodorising effect?
We can answer that question with a very decisive yes. Our Ben & Anna Natural Soda Deodorants use the natural effect of bicarbonate of soda as a deodoriser.
+ Are Ben & Anna products made by hand?
Our first attempts of making Ben & Anna products were indeed by hand and in our kitchen at home. However, since production is legally required to be carried out under strict hygienic conditions (which is a good thing), Ben & Anna products are now produced in a factory which has been certified for natural products.
+ Are Ben & Anna products certified natural cosmetics?
Yes, all of our Ben & Anna products are certified by NaTRUE.
+ Have Ben & Anna products ever been tested on animals and what does the term cruelty free mean?
No, Ben & Anna products have not been tested on animals. The term cruelty free emphasises that we as manufacturers do not carry out any animal tests on our products or have any animal tests carried out by others.
+ Do Ben & Anna also exist for real?
Yes of course. We, Ben & Anna, are real! We still live a strictly vegan lifestyle. Since we have now become parents, we have left the big city of Berlin and returned to Anna´s hometown, Kassel, in northern Hesse. It is quieter here and the air is cleaner than in Berlin. The optimal living conditions for raising our children. Though we do miss the big city a bit.
+ Why we support environmental organisations
We at Ben & Anna consider ourselves a part of a larger community. Together we are committed to reaching environmental goals, realising various projects and supporting global initiatives. Fortunately, there is now a vast array of choices and a growing movement. As an ecologically oriented company, we are always looking for like-minded others who stand out and with whom we can make a difference.
+ What material is the packaging made from?
The paper sleeves of our deodorants are made of FSC-certified paper. A very thin coating of PLA (biodegradable) foil prevents the contents from drying out.
The packing of our tab-series is certified as “ok to compost”.
+ How do the sensitive deodorants work if they do not have bicarbonate of soda? Are they effective?
Yes. Our Sensitive series contains no bicarbonate but rather relies on zinc ricinoleate for its reliable protection against odour-causing bacteria.
+ Do Ben & Anna deodorants leave stains?
We recommend applying the deodorant only very thinly, 1-2 strokes under each arm are enough. In this way, possible stains caused by the shea butter inside can be prevented. If a stain does appear, it can be easily removed with bile soap.
+ What is the shelf life of Ben & Anna deodorant? How do I store them?
Our deodorants have a shelf like of at least 24 months and should be stored in a dry and cool place (below 25 degrees).
+ What is the difference between the Ben & Anna Soda Deodorants and Sensitive Deodorants?
Our soda deodorants reliably deodorise using the ingredient sodium bicarbonate. For people with particularly sensitive skin we recommend our “Sensitive” deodorants, which are based on zinc ricinoleate.
+ What is the difference between the Ben & Anna deodorant sticks and the deodorant cream?
Unlike the sticks, our deodorant cream is applied under the arms by hand, which is why it is softer and smoother in consistency, but the ingredients work the same way as our soda stick deodorants.
+ Why have I had a reaction?
The most common cause for your reaction is either due to an allergy or skin intolerance to bicarbonate of soda or one of the components of the essential oils used. It is quite common to have an allergy or skin intolerance to bicarbonate of soda, but unfortunately the only way to find out if you have an intolerance is to apply it directly on to the skin and test!
Also, if you have an allergy to one of the components of the essential oils it can be hard to pinpoint because it is different for each individual person.
We recommend you apply a very small amount of the deodorant (one or two wipes) to see if that creates a reaction. Some people may only react if they apply excessive amounts. A few drops of lemon juice or vinegar in water applied to the skin before applying the deodorant may also help neutralise the ph value of the baking soda to make it easier for your skin to tolerate. Cleansing your underarms with a mild soap or shower gel before applying your deodorant each morning may also help as any excess sweat can cause irritation or inflammation if it becomes trapped.
If your reaction continues we recommend avoiding products that contain bicarbonate of soda and use a fragrance free moisturiser until your irritation clears.
+ What is Bicaronate of Soda?
Bicarbonate of soda also known as baking soda is a versatile ingredient that can be used in toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, baking, etc. It is an alkaline and needs to come into contact with moisture and an acidic ingredient in order for it to activate.
+ What are the benefits of Bicarbonate of Soda?
Bicarbonate of soda is known for its antibacterial properties and is good at absorbing moisture. It can neutralise the sweat that is being produced by your underarms with its natural pH reducing odour.
+ How do I use the Ben & Anna Toothpaste in a jar?
To use our toothpastes and toothpowders simply use the bamboo spatular to transfer a small amount onto your toothbrush and brush your teeth as normal. Should the bamboo spatula be missing, please let us know. Alternatively, you can use any other small spoon.
